How to Manage Ventilation: Dilemma During and Post COVID-19 Era

To maintain a good quality of indoor air, dilution by outdoor air ventilation is one of measures in building management. And with the COVID-19 pandemic lately, the guidance for mitigating airborne virus spread has largely focused on maximizing outside air (OA) ventilation. Anyway, the huge energy toll (not to mention the carbon emissions impact) of this strategy has been highlighted. So we are in dilemma. On one hand, we want to ventilate to dilute pathogens to respond to COVID-19. But on the other hand, we can save money and save the earth if the OA can be reduced. How can we decide what’s the best course of action?

Until recently, in an under-reported change to its “Commercial Guide”, ASHRAE’s Epidemic Task Force acknowledged the energy penalty associated with increased OA ventilation, and offered an alternative approach that is the use of minimal OA ventilation as required by ASHRAE 62.1 combined with high-efficiency filtration. This can provide same effectiveness of reduction risk of indoor epidemic as outdoor air ventilation but lower extra CapEx and OpEx. Fortunately, there is also a scientific model called Wells-Riley model to find the best mitigation practically.
