Initiatives across Southeast Asia for Sustainable Construction
In
Singapore
the 2nd Green Building Master Plan aim is for 80 per cent of Singapore’s buildings to achieve a "green mark" standard by 2030. The government incentives include the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Scheme with funding worth nearly $93 million, that encourages energy saving modifications to be made to existing structures.
In
Malaysia
the government launched the Green Building Index (GBI) as Malaysia’s industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and to raise awareness in the industry.
In
Indonesia
the Green Building Council of Indonesia (GBCI) launched Greenship, which aims to be a green building rating tool, acting as a voluntary environmental rating system that evaluates the environmental design and construction of buildings.
In
Thailand
developers have begun to start adopting international standards such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) the US certification developed by the US Green Building Certification Institute under the US Green Building Council, Green Star under Australia, and Singapore’s Green Mark as well as the UK BREEAM.
In
Philippines
the Philippines Green Building Council (PHILGBC) launched Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE) Program comprising of the BERDE Green Building Rating System to meet the to the industry demands to address the need for a tool that can measure a green building project’s sustainability credentials.
In
Vietnam
the Vietnam Green Building Council (VGBC) was set up dedicated to sustainability and adaptation in the built environment. The VGBC’s main partners include Hanoi Architectural University, the Vietnam Association of Civil Engineers for the Environment, the Global Cities Institute of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and the World Green Building Council.
